After a successful search, I am pleased to announce the hiring of David Surratt as the Associate Dean of Students. David is currently the Dean of Students at Rosemont College, a four-year Catholic College near Philadelphia, PA, where he is responsible for all aspects of undergraduate student life including athletics, student conduct, disability services, residence life and housing operations, student activities, orientation, counseling and health services and wellness. In his role he also serves as the Title IX Compliance Officer. Prior leadership roles include service as the Director of Residence Life at Saint Peters University, Assistant Director of Student Life at the Pennsylvania State University Berks College and Coordinator of Residence Life at both Mont Alto and Main Campus of the Pennsylvania State University.
In his new role as Associate Dean, David will serve as a chief strategist to the Dean of Students and participate as a member of the Dean’s central leadership team and will assist and advise on the development and implementation of DOS priorities, goals, budget, and fund-raising initiatives. He will represent the DOS on high level committees and task forces, including those convened by the Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellor, and faculty members. David will serve as a strategist and consultant to the DOS and the Protest Response Group before, during, and after campus protests and acts of student civil disobedience, and act as the liaison between protesters, the Administration, and UCPD in the absence of the Dean.
David will also serve as the campus subject matter expert (SME) for all matters pertaining to the First Year Experience (FYE). In this capacity, he will collaborate closely with faculty members and leading administrators within the College of Letters & Science to develop and implement a vision and direction for UC Berkeley’s first comprehensive, co-curricular, unique in class First Year Experience (FYE) program, and will supervise a high achieving FYE staff, lead program assessment efforts and write reports suitable for publication in professional journals. David will also supervise and coordinate the work and budgets of 10 professional staff in the First Year Experience Program and New Student Services, Assessment, Student Legal Services, Marketing and Communications and the Assistant Dean of Students who chairs the Students of Concern Committee and oversees the response to students of concern, crisis management, behavioral intervention and violence reduction programs.
David completed a B.A. in English Literature and M.A. in Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma and is currently an Ed.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at George Washington University. David will officially begin on March 11, 2013 and our office will be coordinating a welcome reception in his honor and contacting many of you for meetings with David during his first month to assist in his transition to our community.
