The ASUC is seeking a dynamic, motivated individual who is interested in social justice issues and local government to take on the role of Cal Housing Director and lead the newly created Cal Housing Commission. The ASUC’s Cal Housing Director is an important and prestigious position charged with protecting the rights of student tenants and addressing the housing needs of UC Berkeley students. As the representative of 35,000 students on all housing-related issues, the position offers valuable leadership opportunities, as well as significant experience working on local government issues.
With deceptive landlord practices, seismically unsafe buildings, potentially illegal leases, and the high cost of rent, finding a good place to live in Berkeley is no easy task. The Cal Housing Director will help alleviate some of this pain by lobbying the city council on issues related to student housing, assisting in the development of an apartment rating and review website, and working with the university residence halls and other organizations to spread information about finding housing and tenants’ rights.
